ISTJ Personality

Introversion, Sensing, Thinking, Judging

This section ISTJ Personality gives a basic overview of the personality type, ISTJ. For more information about the ISTJ type, refer to the links below or on the sidebar.

ISTJs are quiet, orderly, responsible and reliable individuals. Persistent and thorough in the tasks given to them, they will do what it takes to get the job done. They are strongly committed and loyal to their communities (e.g. family, company, society) and can be counted on to fulfil their responsibilities to them faithfully.

They have strong organizational ability and are comfortable working with established policies and procedures, expecting others to do the same. While they prefer to work alone, they work well in teams when roles and responsibilities are clearly defined.

"This is what has worked before."

ISTJs have a profound respect and trust for factual information and their past experiences. They have a great memory and can often remember important dates, details or events accurately. When considering something new, ISTJs are systematic and methodical, considering the new in the light of what they already know.

Hence, they may appear resistant to new ideas and inflexible to untested changes. They see the need to uphold tradition, believing that tradition exists to preserve the secure and proven status quo.

"Let's look at the facts."

They apply logical, objective logic to decision-making. Hence, they prefer working with things over dealing with emotion, especially the irrational emotions of others. When making a decision, they use clearly defined criteria to make a logical choice. They consider tangible factors that are measurable and specific, and discount intangibles like future possibilities or personal feelings.

They will get frustrated with people who use their emotions and personal values in their decision-making. To the ISTJ, subjective criteria should not be brought into the scope of the issue as it messes up the logical process. However, their straightforward and serious approach unintentionally offends at times.

"We need to plan this."

With most things in their life, they use an orderly, organized and scheduled approach. ISTJs often keep a schedule and will stick to that schedule. They do not like unplanned changes to their schedule, and will sometimes be resistant even to necessary changes. They will likely do budgeting with their finances, seeing it as a responsible act to do so.

"What if the worst happens?"

Their Intuition is the weakest of their mental functions. This means that under stress, their intuition function may come out in an undeveloped or a childish manner. They may think about the worst case scenarios or could worry a lot when under stress.
